Welcome to the 1920's!!
The 1920’s were a time of change in the United States. For the first time in history, more people were living in cities than in the country. The United States was also more wealthy than it had ever been.
The first movie theaters, called palaces, opened in 1915 in New York City. Historians estimate that by the end of the decade, three-quarters of the American population visited a movie theater every week.
Watch this Scholastic video (2 min) and this History Channel video (1.34) on the 1920's.

Name an invention that changed life for those living in this era? Dont repeat an invention that one of your classmates has already mentioned!
I thought the traffic light was a cool invention. It changed the lives of people back then, and with barely any modernization, it is still changing our lives today. Just think, without traffic lights how really messed up we would be. In big cities, no one would ever get anywhere and people would be driving out of turn.
ReplyDeleteI think it is crazy that they had to carry ice, so my invention that I wanted to list was the refrigerator. Life would be so different without all the things in that video.
ReplyDeletethe invention that was most interesting for me, was the dishwasher. it made house wives happy:)

ReplyDeleteThe invention of the indoor toilet, must of the people before the 1920s a had outdoor toilet, that must be helpful to have a indoor toilet especially on hot summer days.
ReplyDeletesome inventions from the 1920's that i thought were cool, and changed America, were band-aids and sunglasses! I did some extra research to find these, but i thought it was fascinating. what store do you go into that doesn't sell band-aids or sunglasses? Its a minor thing, but changed america forever.
ReplyDeleteI also found that amazing as well, having the celebrities at the time wear sunglasses, it must have boosted sales to make sunglasses more mainstream.
Deletei think that the invention of sliced bread was cool because everyone loves bread!!! and also gave people a reason to buy pop up toasters =)
ReplyDeleteI'm sure air conditioning changed life for many people in the era! Can you imagine places like Texas, Arizona, Nevada, California--all the hot places, living with no way to keep cool but shade? (Well that and an ice room. :P)
ReplyDeleteAnd Tri-Cities...
DeleteHahaha, well try living in Las Vegas for 8 years, then you'll know the true meaning of hot! :P
DeleteI thought one invention that changed peoples lives in the 1920s was the radio. That enabled people from all over the world to communicate way better! If it wasn't for the radio, we probably wouldn't have portable music right now!
ReplyDeleteI think a great 20s invention was the television. Even though there were probably hardly any Chanel's back then, it was a new facinating technology that we still use today.
ReplyDeleteI thin a great invention in the Golden Age was the Ford Model T. It changed travelling and it started the business of cars! Today if I were walking down the street and I saw a horse instead of a car, I would probably be confused.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the invention of jazz was the most amazing! I am literally in love with jazz and it's cool to know when it started! But since that's not really an invention, I'll say I like the Insulin Injections thing. I have a friend with diabetes and I would hate to see him die!
ReplyDeleteI found the liquid fueled rocket interesting because the inventor would have had to ignore all the other ways to fuel a rocket and focus on trying to get a new way to fuel a rocket
ReplyDeleteWell it seems like most of the inventions in the video are taken up! but I have to say that the more common use of electricity in the average household was pretty amazing, I mean, who here today does not appreciate electricity? And before then, only the more wealthy people could pay for electricity.
ReplyDeleteI also think the liquid fueled rocket was really cool.
